The most common symptoms of anal cancer are pain and bleeding from the anus. Some people develop small, firm lumps, which may be confused with piles (hemorrhoids).

Other symptoms include discomfort, itching and a discharge of mucous from the anus. Fecal incontinence (a reduced ability to control bowel function) may also occur. Anal cancer can appear as an ulcerated area and may spread to the skin of the buttocks.
